| | | | Good morning. President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in just about three weeks, and while President Joe Biden has promised an uneventful transition, he's tried to throw a few monkey wrenches in Trump's way. Plus, if you missed it while opening Christmas presents, the America First movement got into a bit of a civil war over the H1B visa program. | Mentioned in this edition: Donald Trump, Sriram Krishnan, Vivek Ramaswamy, Steve Bannon, Kevin Marino Cabrera, President Biden, Mike Johnson, Rand Paul, John Fetterman, Dan Patrick, the Panama Canal, the 113th Congress, and more. | | Have tips? | | WHAT WE'RE WATCHING | | π£ Conservatives are feuding over the H1B program. Trump's pick of Sriram Krishnan — a venture capitalist who has called for lifting green card caps, otherwise known as H1B visas — split Trump's America First movement. Then, Vivek Ramaswamy made a viral post in which he praised academic exceptionalism while deriding American youth for falling behind. Ramaswamy's demand for increasing foreign workers, especially in STEM fields, caused an uproar among Trump's base. | 𧱠Biden's plan to sell materials from Trump's wall failed. The Biden administration had quietly attempted to sell as many as 8,000 panels of wall materials before Donald Trump was sworn into office. However, through a combination of public pressure from the president-elect and Texas' government announcing it would buy all the materials, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick announced the auctioneer had promised to hold off until Trump was inaugurated. | π³ Trump blamed China for ripping off America in the Panama Canal. The president-elect started off his Christmas Day message by highlighting a claim that Chinese soldiers are illegally operating in the canal and charging too high "repair" fees. This latest salvo comes amid days of a back-and-forth between him and the Panamanian president. Other members of Trump's incoming administration, such as Elbridge Colby, have backed up the president-elect's remarks. | π° Steve Bannon said populists should support raising taxes on the rich. In a wide-ranging interview, the former White House advisor — who still holds sway in the New Right, despite not landing a formal role in the second Trump administration — argued that corporations and wealthy individuals need to pay more, while taxes that affect those who are worse off, like taxes on tips and social security, should be cut. |

THE EXECUTIVE | President-elect Trump announced Kevin Marino Cabrera, a Miami-Dade County commissioner, as his nominee for Ambassador to Panama. President Biden signed a law officially making the bald eagle America's national bird; previously, it had been an unofficial title. Greenland's government rebuffed Trump's desire to buy the territory. President-elect Trump, in response to Biden's spate of commutations, announced he would "vigorously pursue" the death penalty for violent offenders.
