The cards and covers were all composed while the artist was incarcerated in various California prisons over several decades, likely meant to keep a connection with his wife on the outside. The cards and letters were (all but one, which is to a grandson) created for his wife.
African-American Themes
His crimes and incarcerations aside, Ward is a gifted and talented artist. His artwork is attractive and bold: colorful, strong and bright. He is also a talented calligrapher. Subject matter includes many African American themes (titles include African Expressions, African Pride, My African Queen, etc.), love and romance, religion, and animals. Some illustrations show his wife and/or the two of them as a couple, and many have simple themes of love and affection. They bear titles including Expressions of Love, Loving You in Special, Sweet Inspirations, Forever Yours, Eternal Love and similar.
The messages all repeat his love and affection for Fely, good wishes for her life and future, and his faith.
