| | | | WHAT WE'RE WATCHING | | π«π· France sparked a wave of Palestine recognition announcements. Just over a week ago, France announced it would recognize a Palestinian state. Since then, the United Kingdom, Canada, Finland, and Malta all indicated they could join France later this year. Until now, Spain and Ireland were the only two Western European countries to recognize a Palestinian state. | πΊπ¦ Ukraine's government backtracked on a major reform. Kyiv recently passed a law stripping independence from agencies which investigate government corruption, putting them under the indirect control of the president. The move elicited widespread protests — the first since the Russo-Ukrainian War expanded in February 2022 — and led the European Union to threaten to withhold aid. Facing pressure, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy quickly signed a new law nullifying the changes. | πͺπΊ The European Union just made deportations significantly harder. In a new ruling, the European Court of Justice ruled that migrants could only be deported to countries which protect all minorities within a country. This extremely stringent standard effectively blocks all deportations to the Middle East, Africa, and much of south-eastern Asia if the deportee claims to be a part of a persecuted class. | πΊπΈ President Trump moved two nuclear submarines closer to Russia. For years, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev — who currently serves on Russia's National Security Council — has threatened neighbors and the United States with nuclear weapons. Yesterday, President Trump indicated he was taking those threats seriously and moved two nuclear-armed submarines to "appropriate regions…in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that." |

| | | QUICK AND IMPORTANT | El Salvador's parliament eliminated presidential term limits and extended the president's term to six years, allowing incumbent Nayib Bukele to run again. France paused all evacuations from Gaza after one Gazan, who had been accepted to a prestigious French university, was found to have expressed support for Hitler and the Holocaust. Slovenia became the first European country to ban all weapon sales to Israel. An Australian region has established "machete drop boxes," where people can leave machetes and other knives, in an attempt to stem rampant knife crime.
