Archive of a World War II Conscientious Objector
Collection of materials relating to the U.S. Selective Service, pacifism, and conscientious objection assembled by George Adams Steele (1914-1996) of Pasadena, California. Born into Quaker family in Philadelphia, Steele writes in handwritten statement contained in the archive:
A wonderful archive of 150+ letters, documents and photographs from Edgar B Keemer and his family.
Keemer was an early African-American student at the University of Michigan where he met his wife who was also a student there. The collection is primarily from 1900 to the 1920s. Keemer would become the head of pharmacy at Howard University in the early 1900s.
