We know the bare minimum: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, one full meal, two small meals, no snacking.
But if we stop there, we miss what fasting is actually for.
John Heinen shares how he fasted for years the wrong way. It was self-mortification for the sake of self-control, white-knuckling, and quiet pride. It produced very little spiritual fruit.
Until a spiritual director challenged him, helping him become freer to say yes to the Creator in the moments it was most important.
Fr. Ken explains why the Church's fasting "prescription" sounds so light. And for those who are able-bodied and serious about Lent, the question becomes more personal:
Lord, how are You inviting me to fast?
