| | | WHAT WE'RE WATCHING: IRAN CONFLICT | | ๐ฎ๐ท Trump warns more US troops may die in Iran conflict. President Trump commented that three American service members have already been killed (though a fourth has now been confirmed) and more will "likely" die as operations continue against Iran. He framed the campaign as a generational necessity to stop a nuclear-armed regime, insisting that combat would continue until "all of our objectives are achieved." | ๐ฐ๐ผ Three US fighter jets downed in apparent friendly fire. CENTCOM confirmed that Kuwaiti air defenses mistakenly shot down three American F-15E Strike Eagles during active combat against Iranian drones and missiles. All six crew members ejected safely and are in stable condition. | ๐ฑ๐ง Hezbollah fired missiles at Israel, breaking the ceasefire. The Iranian-backed group launched projectiles from Lebanon on Sunday in retaliation for Khamenei's death, prompting Israeli strikes across Lebanon, including in Beirut. The Lebanese Prime Minister condemned Hezbollah's "reckless" action, warning that it "endangers Lebanon's security and gives Israel excuses to continue attacking." | ๐ฌ๐ง British Royal Air Force base in Cyprus hit by Iranian drone. An unmanned drone struck the airport runway at RAF Akrotiri early Monday morning, causing minor damage but no casualties. The attack came hours after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer granted the US permission to use British bases for limited defensive operations against Iranian missile sites. | ๐ธ๐ฆ Iran hit a major Saudi oil refinery. Iran expanded the battlefield on Sunday by targeting Saudi Arabia's massive Ras Tanura refinery with drones. Iran has also threatened shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, causing transit suspensions through both Hormuz and the Suez Canal. With about one-fifth of global oil trade passing through, it sent shockwaves through the energy markets. | | What began as limited US-Israeli strikes across Iran is quickly spiraling into a regional conflict. Iran is striking British airbases in Cyprus, Hezbollah — an Iranian proxy — is now striking Israel, and the Saudis are now under attack by Iran. The Trump administration has a tall task ahead to de-escalate and ensure this regional war does not draw in even more global powers. — Brandon |

| | | ASK THE EDITORS | No, this is not an "illegal war" with Iran | Many Democrats and left-leaning political commentators have been filling the airwaves with their contention that President Donald Trump launched an illegal war with Iran, since the president must receive formal approval from Congress to declare war, per Article I of the Constitution. | It's true that Article I lays out this process. It's also true that the US has not formally declared war since World War II. | The 1973 War Powers Act allows the president to unilaterally conduct military actions for 60 days without congressional approval. This can then be extended for another 30 days if the president submits a written letter to Congress declaring that an extension would help bring the operations to an end. | Further, the Authorization for Use of Military Force — enacted in 2001 and 2002 in the wake of 9/11 — grants the president extensive, unilateral military powers without Congressional approval. If Trump's military actions in Iran are "illegal," then so have every president's since Harry Truman. | | Submit your question here. Request topics to cover here. |
