College basketball coaching carousel intel: Hot seat updates entering conference tournament week |
With conference tournament season underway, the college basketball coaching carousel is beginning to accelerate across the Power Four. Multiple programs are evaluating the future of their head coaches as the regular season ends and postseason play begins. Industry sources tell On3 that several high-major jobs are trending toward opening this spring, while others could hinge on conference tournament results. As administrators weigh buyouts, recent performance, and long-term program direction, decisions could come quickly once conference tournaments wrap up. Multiple coaches fired Sunday Two P4 programs just made their decisions as the carousel begins to turn. Boston College moved on from Earl Grant following an 11-20 season and a 4-14 mark in ACC play. Grant showed promise earlier in his tenure, leading the Eagles to a 20-win season in 2023-24, but the program has struggled to sustain that momentum. BC has not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2009. Pete Nakos has the top candidates to replace Grant. Georgia Tech also fired head coach Damon Stoudamire after a difficult second season in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets finished 11-20 overall and just 2-16 in ACC play, the program's lowest conference win total since 2014-15. With new AD Ryan Alpert now in place, Georgia Tech opted to move in a new direction after the former NBA guard struggled to gain traction in the ACC. Joe Tipton has the premium GT hot board here. | 2026 NCAA Tournament Predictions: Bracketology shifts with mid-major championship results |
As the regular season comes to a close, the projected NCAA Tournament field is beginning to take clearer shape. Conference tournaments will ultimately determine the final bracket, but most teams have already established their position heading into the final stretch before Selection Sunday. With mid-major champions continuing to claim auto bids and bubble teams battling for position, the at-large picture is starting to solidify. Based on the latest projections from On3, several teams appear comfortably in the field while others remain squarely on the bubble entering conference tournament play. Projected 1-line Welcome back to the 1-seed line, Florida. The Gators jumped into position after finishing the regular season with another win over Kentucky. Duke, Michigan, and Arizona remain firmly on the 1-line with impressive season-ending victories over UNC, Michigan State, and Colorado, respectively. Last four byes NC State, Missouri, Texas, and Santa Clara currently sit just above the cutline and are projected to avoid the First Four games in Dayton. However, all four teams remain close enough to the bubble that conference tournament results could still shift their position. Last four in UCF, SMU, VCU, and Indiana currently represent the final four at-large teams projected into the NCAA Tournament field. If the tournament started today, those teams would meet in Dayton in the First Four play-in games. First four out Auburn, New Mexico, Virginia Tech, and Cincinnati currently sit just outside the projected field. Each team remains within striking distance but likely needs a strong conference tournament showing to move onto the right side of the bubble. |

Predicting every power conference team's jersey patch sponsor |
Arkansas announced that Tyson Foods is paying to have a patch on every Razorback's uniform, and 90 percent of the money from the deal will go to athlete NIL deals. Arkansas is the second power conference school — after LSU — to announce its jersey patch sponsor since the NCAA voted in January to allow them. We're going to see dozens more of these deals in the next few months, so Andy Staples took a shot at guessing which patches will adorn the jerseys of every single power conference football team this fall. Many of these partnerships just make sense. Florida and Gatorade share a direct origin story, Boston College and Dunkin' are culturally inseparable, and Louisville and KFC feels almost inevitable. Others make sense because of geography or powerful alumni ties, whether it's Michigan and Ford, or Texas A&M and Buc-ee's. As schools look for ways to fund the growing cost of rosters, jersey patches could become some of the most valuable real estate in college sports. | |
| College basketball coaching carousel: Names set to dominate searches |
With the NCAA Tournament approaching, the college basketball coaching carousel is beginning to take shape. Kansas State already has an opening and Providence is expected to make a move, while other programs could soon follow once conference tournaments conclude. Athletic directors are increasingly prioritizing coaches who can build sustainable programs while navigating the transfer portal and modern roster payroll dynamics. Several mid-major head coaches are expected to be among the most sought-after candidates, while a handful of experienced names could also re-enter the market. Here are several names to know as the 2026 coaching carousel begins to form: Josh Schertz, Saint Louis: The hottest name on the market. Schertz has Saint Louis sitting at 27-3 and ranked in the AP Top 25 after previously engineering a turnaround at Indiana State. His program-building track record has already drawn early interest from schools like Kansas State. Tom Crean / Kevin Keatts / Rodney Terry: Industry sources say to watch for experienced "retread" hires as well. All three former power-conference head coaches could emerge as candidates as more jobs open. Casey Alexander, Belmont: One of the most consistent winners in the mid-major ranks. Alexander has won 20-plus games in every season at Belmont and just secured the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title. Travis Steele, Miami (Ohio): The RedHawks have been one of the biggest stories in college basketball with a 30-0 record entering the final weekend of the regular season. Steele has quickly rebuilt his reputation after his time at Xavier. |
