ASK THE EDITORS |
Why are gas prices falling? |
Q: If the USA does not rely on Iranian oil, why are the gas prices adversely impacted by the situation in Iran? Don’t we refine US crude oil into gasoline for US citizens? — Mike from South Carolina |
A: It’s true that the US produces and refines a large amount of its own oil, and it imports very little crude oil directly from Iran. But gasoline prices are set by the global oil market. |
Think of it this way — if a major oil-producing region is threatened, the global price of crude rises for everyone. Iran sits next to the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes. When that route is cut off, traders bid up oil prices worldwide, meaning American refiners have to pay those higher prices too. |
Gas prices are now falling here at home because investors appear optimistic that the emerging ceasefire deal will open the Strait of Hormuz, drastically increasing oil shipments. That optimism has pushed oil prices lower, which translates into cheaper gas at the pump. |
