| | Good morning. Congress might be on its way to passing a congressional stock trading ban, which is devastating news for the over 1 million followers of Nancy Pelosi Stock Tracker. Plus, President Trump has been at the center of a maelstrom of executive branch activity, but has hardly signed any bills. We look into why. | |

| | WHAT WE'RE WATCHING | | π At least a dozen House Republicans won't vote for Medicaid cuts. Hardline conservatives are demanding major spending cuts in the reconciliation bill, and want around $880 billion to come from Medicaid. However, moderates have warned Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) that they won't vote for it; with only a seven-seat majority, this would effectively kill the bill. The moderates have good reason to be concerned, as Medicaid cuts are extremely unpopular and could hurt Republicans in next year's elections. | βοΈ Josh Hawley wants Republicans to focus on working-class tax cuts. In a Washington Post op-ed, the senior senator from Missouri argued that the GOP should cut taxes for those earning less than $80,000 a year. His plan would see three of the largest tax credits β the home mortgage deduction, the child tax credit, and the charitable deduction β made available to anyone who pays a payroll tax. In the past, Hawley has floated the idea of paying for working-class tax cuts by taxing the wealthy. | π Trump threatened to ban Harvard from accepting international students. The Trump administration had previously demanded that Harvard comply with the president's executive order on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. As the State Department controls who receives visas, the White House could easily cripple Harvard's ability to accept foreigners, who pay higher fees than Americans. The move demonstrates the administration's commitment to enforcing its anti-DEI priorities. | π΅ DNC Vice Chair David Hogg declared war on his own party. The school shooting survivor and newly anointed Democratic National Committee leader said he would support primary challenges against safe-seat Democrats he claimed were "asleep at the wheel." While DNC vice chairs are not typically influential, his super PAC has tens of millions of dollars, which he can utilize as he sees fit. The intra-party squabble comes as Democrats continue to seek a unified message to run on against Republicans in next year's elections. |
