WHAT WE'RE WATCHING |

π° FBI Director Kash Patel sues The Atlantic for $250 million. Patel filed a defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic and reporter Sarah Fitzpatrick after they published a hit piece alleging erratic behavior, excessive drinking, and unexplained absences. Patel's attorney sent a detailed pre-publication letter disputing the claims point-by-point and warning the outlet that the allegations were categorically false. The Atlantic later issued a statement standing by its reporting. |
π° Ilhan Omar blamed accountants after massive net worth error. The Minnesota congresswoman's office revised her financial disclosure, stating her net worth was between $6 million and $30 million, down to between $18,004 and $95,000. Omar's attorney claimed the error was unintentional, though House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) raised concerns about "unknown individuals investing to gain influence." |
π Tucker Carlson's son left JD Vance's team. Buckley Carlson, who served as Vance's deputy press secretary, departed the vice president's office to launch a political consulting firm as tensions escalated between his father and President Trump. Trump recently called Tucker a "Low IQ person" and "flailing fool," while Tucker has expressed deep regret for helping get Trump elected. |
π· Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung announced that Chavez-DeRemer is leaving the administration, with Deputy Secretary Keith Sonderling stepping in as acting secretary. Her exit follows a mass staff exodus at the Labor Department and comes amid an ongoing investigation into the agency. |

EDITOR’S NOTE |
A time to disagree |
In his old age, reflecting on his reign and the lessons of a life fully lived, King Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes 3:8 his famous truism: in the world God created for us, there is “a time for war and a time for peace.” |
That is the way of the world, but so many today — cushioned by an era of unprecedented comfort — seem to have forgotten it. The great warrior kings of Europe, Napoleon and Frederick the Great, saw that conquest could secure peace for their people. Americans knew they had to cross the Atlantic to defeat the Axis. The cost of peace, history has shown again and again, is often war. |
So, when Pope Leo XIV condemned Trump’s Iran war and declared that God is never on the side of those who take up arms, Vice President Vance pushed back. His argument was straightforward: for over a thousand years, the Catholic Church itself has taught that some wars are just. The Pope's blanket condemnation, Vance said, contradicts history and the Church's own doctrine. |
Of course, we hope the war is quick and causes minimal harm. But there is a time for war — and with Iran’s overgrown military capabilities, both nuclear and ballistic, that time was now. |

TEAM DEBATE |
Who are the peacemakers? |
Our world is a messy and broken place, and war is an inevitable outgrowth of the evil in man’s heart. There’s no doubt that the Iranian regime has evil intentions with its decades of nuclear and weapons development and funding terrorism across the Middle East, responsible for an untold number of deaths. |
But what exactly did Pope Leo condemn? He warned against manipulating religion and “the very name of God for … military, economic or political gain,” and called not to drag the sacred “into darkness and filth.” |
When Pete Hegseth prays at the Pentagon that “every round find its mark against the enemies of righteousness” and requests that God “break the teeth of the ungodly,” and when his boss, President Trump, posts online about annihilating Iranian civilization — who exactly is playing the role of peacemaker here? |
Of course it is true that defeating a wicked enemy can bring peace — Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, ISIS, etc. But Christianity is a radical religion that breaks the “way of the world.” Pope Leo is correct in his calls for peace and de-escalation, though we recognize the evil of the world sometimes requires damnable wars. |
